I'm gonna be building a work bench here real soon. After rebuilding a Blaster motor literally off of the garage floor, I realized I need a work bench before I go ripping my other motor apart. I'll keep this thread updated with pictures during the process. I have one question for you guys. What wood would you recommend I use for the base and what wood for the top? I need something sturdy that won't flex very much for the top, and I need something strong enough to withstand some pounding for the base. Let me now your suggestions!

I built mine out of 2X4's, 3/4 melamine, and aluminum laminate. I then used 3/4 rubber T mold to edge the plywood. Here are some pics that show the bench.

A google search gives lots of ideas. I personally would cover the top of my bench with an aluminum or steel plate.

Thanks guys, and that is an awesome bench. I wouldn't have thought to cover it with a steel/aluminum plate

check with your local scrap yard to see if they'll sale you a piece of steel/aluminum to fit your needs.
1 of the 4 local yards here will resale me anything at slightly higher than scrap prices.

personally i like a wooden top, to screw things to when an extra hand is needed. like the sheets of 6061 aluminum i cut brake brackets out of, i drill small holes around the perimeter and drywall screw it to the bench with the area i'm working hanging off the front
