Any one ever work on these things much ? Long story short my father and law parked his mower last year and this year it wouldn't start. After some diagnosing I realized it was blowing back through the carb and nothing coming out the exhaust ???

Pulled off the head and the rockers fell right on the ground . One push rod was bent and where the adjustments for the valves are that is part of the actual head was a big hole.

So my question is,,,,,, is this thing even worth rebuilding ? Could a cam lobe be worn really bad that caused this ,,did it get to hot, valves waaay out of adjustment ??? He said it would back fire fairly often when he shut it off but only after running for a while.. Also it has 2 different push rods one aluminum and one steel the aluminum or bent. Replacing the head isn't nothing to do but don't want to replace it if its just going to grenade again. The mower itself is in great shape.

Or,,, if anyone one has a head and push rods to one of these Briggs 15 HP intek,,, or a whole motor hit me up.

How many hours is on it? What year is it? Those briggs should run forever. I would rebuild it if it were me. That is weird that it was that messed up though. If a new head is $100, I would put that on and make sure the valves are adjusted correctly. If it didn't smoke before, I would think you should be good. That's my opinion.

Thanks for the input. I thought the same thinking it should run forever. Some of the older Briggs motors seemed to anyways. They just build them like they used to that's for sure.

It doesn't smoke at all, and the cylinder still has crosshatching. I think I am going to rebuild it. As far as I know he has never adjusted the valves. The recommendations are for them to be adjusted once a year. I did a lil research and I guess these things are known for blowing head gaskets and bad connecting rods. I may just replace the rod as well. Do a lil porting and have Gramp's popping wheelies ..

Ill try and get some pics of the carnage when I get back to working on it.

Head finaly showed up. $120 included all the gaskets and 2 new push rods. Put head on set the valve clearance and she runs like a champ.

I found out that the valve stuck, Tons of carbon on the piston and in the head. Old crappy gas I presume.

In the first pic, you can see where the head cracked. The push rod bent trying to open the valve and pushed so hard that it tore the adjuster right from the head .. Very very easy job to do if anyone ever runs into this situation.
