my uncle has a 1989 blaster he is going to give me he said it needs a top end gasket. i was just going to do a whole top end rebuild. but he said when he was riding i. the engine just stop on him so he just threw it under a tarp and left it there. do you know why it just shut off?

theres a lot of possibilities. the jetting could have been too lean and the piston seized or this could have also happened because of an airleak. The crank bearings or something could have gone out and now the crank wont move. oil injection could have failed if its still on there. theres more things that could have happened you wont really know until you dig into it. once you take the top end apart it should be pretty easy to find your problem. does it kick over? if so then it could be electrical? if it just shut off and the motor didnt lock up then disregard the piston seizing but it could have just lost compression because of the gasket. no matter what happened if hes giving it to you its a good deal and blasters are VERY easy to work on

as blasterboy said could be a alot of things sounds more like a air leak but if its been lying for a while it could now be a variety of things wrong. once you get it fire some pics up and sure we could help out I:I

alright im going to do a compression and leak down test first! but is there any way to do the leak down test like to start the bike and spray carb cleaner or water ?

Theres a person on here named slickerthanyou sells em pretty cheap like 30 bucks or 32 or something an there made for blasters its a good investment with a rebuild you will need to do a leakdown test more than once... with just owning a blaster you will need to do one more than once:D

That will detect a leak, but if you have one your risking running the bike with the leak. You could have a leak someplace that you don't spray and you will never know. Safest bet is to build or buy a tester, Slick won't do ya wrong.

another popular reason a bike will just shut down is a broken reed
pull the carb and peek into the intake

Maybe...and this is a long shot...the spring in the run/kill switch was bad and didn't hold tension to the switch and it vibrated over to kill. When I bought my blaster a few months back, I was told the switch seized up, I tore it apart and found a stick shoved in there because of that very reason. I'm guessing when they trail rode it, it kept sliding over to kill so they rigged it to always run.
