ok im a newb to this site so sorry if i am posting ion the wrong place.....i have a 89 blaster got from a friend, been running good until today, i put a new air filter in, oem, started dribing it, all was well til about 2 min down the trails it sounded like a pop maybe chain broke or somethiing, i stopped chain is fine, idle was fine. i keep going, quad stalls about 10 min later. wouldnt start for about 5 min. finally starting but running horrible. idle wasnt to bad but whenever i went over half throttle it would bog very baddly, got home i turn it off, waited about ten min then start it, engine would back fire and keep dying, then when running air would burst out from the right side of the head, is my head gasket going ? what else oculd it be? any advice would be great, thanks and all engine parts are stock, well i know at lease the whole carb is stock, internals not sure but more than likey stock, kid before me was as useless as tits on a bull.

Welcome to the dirt pile I:I . You are right, does sound like a head gasket. Don't ride it till fixed. FYI, always best to include as much info on your set-up as possible, mods. B)

Just make sure that it is coming from between the head and the jug.

I diagnosed a similar problem the other day, it turned out to be that a back fire had taken out the exhaust flange gasket, and it looked like it was blowing out of the head.

The backfiring was caused by an air leak on the induction side.

Your symptoms seem to replicate this one.

Is it possible for you to get a leak down test done?

yea ive been thinking about getting a leak down tester, but its a 89 and i know dude before me dindnt rebuild it, dam thing was flooded with water before i got it. im thiking a gasket set should do it,

Do a compression check to see if top end is good. If the compression is good. Do a leak down test. Pull the carb and give it a good internal cleaning and check what main jet size is in it. Do you know if there is any modification to the motor, porting, aftermarket exhaust, aftermarket air filter , air box lid on or off ?

im gunna do a compression test see how that goes, i may just replace piston and rings while im in there

If comp is good you don't need to fix it cause it's not broke :D Might consider pulling exhaust and taking a look at the piston and cylinder. When piston is at bottom you can see inside cylinder, piston at top you can see if piston is scored or burnt, etc I:I
