Blaster power seems weak until top of each gear

Just picked up a 2000 model, supposedly recently rebuilt, who's to say.

Anyway, whenever I take off, I feel like it doesn't have much power until I get up in the RPM's towards the top of the gears. If I pin it, it will pull the wheels through 4th gear, so the power is there, it just seems focused at the top of each gear. Half throttle through any gears seems like its "chugging" so to speak and kinda lurches some.

Is this a jetting issue? Are there numbers on the jets if I pull them out, will I be able to tell what they are?

It has a FMF Gold Series Fatty pipe and I believe a PowerCore 2 silencer.

Any help would be appreciated!

Welcome !!
Yes the jets have numbers and it sounds to be a jet/carb issue. Many DIY threads here for carb cleaning/dissassembly. A good cleaning won't hurt. Write sizes, air screw setting, needle clip down.
Seeing its new to you and "supposedly" rebuilt, a leak-down test will be highly suggested, as maybe a compression test. These will help determine health of engine a will help diagnosing possible trouble.

Welcome.

Is this Blaster the first 2 stroke you have ridden?

Doughiness can be caused by a too rich a needle setting, the clip should be in the middle slot.

A higher than spec float setting can also return similar symptoms.

Not my first 2 stroke, and I've had tons of quads/bikes. I'm most familiar with 4 stroke Yamaha's and Suzuki's. I've cleaned many a carburetor but never played with jet sizing.

I have scoured some on here, but didn't realize the float could affect it in that aspect. Will definitely tear it off there and check it out.

I intend on pulling the motor this week to repaint the frame and components, so perfect timing for carb fun. Just pulled the airbox lid a few minutes ago and it has a K&N so perhaps I'll do the airbox lid delete too.

Thanks guys! I'll keep you posted. Free time is a rare thing around my house.

And can you point me to a thread about the needle setting? Not sure what you mean by the middle clip. The only clips I'm familiar with in an ATV carb is in the float.

Pulling the choke on and slowing down points to a lean mix, not enough fuel or too much air.
Check the pilot jet size, or set the idle correctly.View attachment 9960 The clip is the c shaped gizmo above number 4 the needle, it should be in the middle slot.

There should be a little slack in the throttle cable!

Is the oil injection nippe on the carby blocked off so that no air can enter?
Idk if the pics will come through but the thread was called "running away" or something like that

So I finally pulled the carb off last night - the needle clip was at the very bottom and the main jet is a 230!

Very probable why it's not running 100%. I just got done tearing the whole thing apart and cleaning, painting and tightening everything for the last 2 weeks.

Got a 260, 270, 280 jets from a local shop this morning. Hopefully I'll have some time this weekend to try them out.

Bike has an FMF Gold Series Fatty header and Turbine Core 2 silencer and a K&N Filter with the stock airbox, lid and snorkel. Think I'm going to take the snorkel off as FMF suggests when I do the jetting.

And Blaaster, thanks for your help in my other thread, I got the bridge rectifier from Radio Shack and wiring it up was a piece of cake!

Putting on a tethered kill switch tonight and removing the stock headlight/killswitch assy all together. Already removed the headlight and ignition panel.

Here's what it currently looks like. I'm an IT guy and have a graphics business on the side - did all these at home.

If you are taking the snorkel off, would be inclined to put in the #280, needle on middle clip and plug chop to confirm.

Have you leak tested, it would be a good idea.

If you pre mix the fuel you may need one size larger main jet.

Seems to me that you were super rich in the mid range due to the needle clip in bottom groove, that lifts the needle up enriching the 1/4-3/4 portion of the throttle range, an its lean up to cause thats a stock main jet. I would definitely start withthe 280 main as blaaster stated, clip in middle, ditch the box lid, an delete oil iinjection if not done already, set air screw to 1.5 turns out, i would suspect that you probably gonna end up around a 260 or 270 once your though with your plug chops an fine tuning

It looks good man. I would go ahead n pull the airbox lid and either modify it with the outerwears kit, buy a an outerwears lid, or get an outerwears cover for your filter. You don't have to use the outerwears, but if you plan on hitting any mud or water its good to have
