Another new blaster, another new problem

So I came across yet another Blaster over the weekend (two weeks ago I had none, now I have two...) in exchange for scrap metal that I had in my shop and in the outlying building. A sixteen foot trailer full to be exact. In any case, the new blaster is a 98, has nerfs installed, a decent front bumper and an exhaust from bills pipes. Only problem is it wont start unless your giving it some throttle. Hold the throttle in, even a little bit and it will stay running. Let it off and it stalls. No idle at all. I was thinking that maybe it wasnt jetted after the exhaust was installed but its definitely been on there a while. Someone else said it might be the tors system. Im not really familiar with the system but I wasnt sure if it would only kill the bikes idle. With even the smalles amount of throttle, it will stay running.

turn up the idle screw on top of the tors, under the seat you'll see a big silver thumb screw, and clean the air filter and carb good

Thanks for the replies guys, Im going to start in on it tomorrow after the jobs are done at my shop. The thing had a few problems but I cant complain for a freebie. Bought a new adjuster setscrew and lock nut today since the front brake setup was missing them. The rear brake was removed and theres a hydraulic setup on the left handle. Though it was missing the banjo bolt and the rear caliper bracket is missing so Im going to have to fab something up and make it work. Ordered ther banjo bolt last night along with a ratio rite cup and some Klotz super techniplate. Previous owner removed oil injection. Im going to look at it again tomorrow and look into cleaning carb and adjusting idle. Am I correct in assuming the carb should have been rejetted with the new exhaust put on there? So there should be plus sized jets compared to factory.... correct? Unfortunately I dont know much of what was done to the bike and if it was done correctly. I know the oil line that is usually capped off of the carb is still there and they stuck a screw in the end with a clamp. Sure it works but its kinda half @$$ed in my opinion. I think Im going to buy an injection block off kit just in case they half @$$ed that too. If it doesnt need it, Im going to throw it on my other Blaster. Went out for a two hour ride tonight with my friend and his Predator and we were pretty far away from where we went into the woods. At least it will be one less thing to worry about out in the woods. Thanks again guys, Ill let you know how it turns out.

I thought i had posted this yesterday but I mustve forgotten to hit submit. In any case I took apart the carb and cleaned out everything thoroughly with carb cleaner. THings were surprisingly clean to begin with. In the process I noticed two immediate problems. First is the idle set screw located on top of the TORS unit. Per everyones advice, I looked for it and didnt see it. So I compared to the 94 and thats when I realized the one on the 98 has only a tiny sliver of a broken bolt where the idle screw used to be. Awesome. Bought a TORS eliminator kit, to resolve that issue. Other problem was the main jet was still the stock 230. A little searching around the net and I found a guy that asked what jet size for a blaster with a full Bills pipes etup like I have and the person said a 270 jet was recommended per Billspipes.com . Unfortunately the website is down and says will return in January of 2010.... he mustve forgot to flip his calendar or something. So Im assuming shes in need of rejetting. Pulled plug that was in it and it was dark, but not fouled. Figured it would have indications of being lean as the exhaust was on there for a while, as evident by the rusting on the pipes. Any thoughts? Rejetting required?

u still have stock jet in it.put like a 260 or 270 main and then go somewhere where you can go wide open throttle and do plug chops with a new plug.the only way to tell ur jetting is by plug chops.no one can give you an exact number on the jet for it to be right.its all trial and error

Im waiting on a lot of parts to come in that Ive ordered in the last two days. Once I get the TORS removed and verify that the oil injection was blocked off properly, Im going to start into the rejetting process. Only bad thing is there arent any long straightaways that I can get on it in 6th gear like I read needs to be done to check main jetting. Might have to get it done at a local shop. They only charge 75 to tune / rejet it. Probably better to make sure its done right the first time.

So I ended up getting the TORS eliminator last night. Installed it, hoping that I could at least get a choppy idle at best compared to what I had before... nope. Still does the same thing. Wont stay running unless you give it a little throttle. Messed with the new idle screw and still got the same result. Glad I didnt pay for this Blaster.
