went to do a plug chop on my not-even-completely-broken-in newly ported and bored jug, shut it off at probably 8k in 6th, pulling in the clutch at the same time as always, and while the motor was reving down it was going CLANK CLANK CLANK. i was like oh man, i hope thats just a product of the high compression, pipe and portwork.... i'm such a hopeful dreamer...

spark plug insulator failed... i was hoping that it just shot the insulator out the exhaust....

wrong again. i cleaned the head and piston up, the bore had some very small scratches, so i honed them out with very fine sandpaper, cleaned it all up, and went for it.... it started right up and seems to run just as strong as before, but i can't help but think it's not gonna be at it's highest potential now....

i never fouled a plug in either of my blasters the entire time i've had them, so they rarely got changed. LESSON LEARNED. spark plugs are cheap; change regularly.
 
never heard of honeing using sandpaper ? if your still using that head like that ,i would say you are not running to its old potential even if your dynobutt2000 feels like it is
 
hickskateboarder it looks like the piston is up quite a bit in the cylinder and there seems to be a cut head? is all your parts stock or everything cut
 
yeah, it was ported by angus kennedy, he mills the top of the jug b/c it has a negative deck height. also did some work to the head. makes mad power, but apparently blows up old spark plugs hahaha. Change Often!
 
so their was not enough clearance and the piston was hiting the plug? put another washer on it?
 
blasters have a positive deck height from the factory, negative would mean the piston protrudes from the bore. As far as the plug goes the insulator must have been cracked prior to running it. I've seen this happen one time, the guy said he had dropped the plug and didn't think it would hurt anything. Are there any severe gouges in your piston? If so, I recommend you replace it as it's integrity may have been compromised and further damage can/will happen if your piston fails.
 
my bad, i had them backwards. it had a positive deck height from factory, it now has a negative deck height.

don't remember ever dropping the spark plug or anything, although it is very possible.

there are some small gouges in the top of the piston, but i don't think i would call them major. i couldn't imagine it's structural integrity was diminished too greatly. i guess i'll find out :-/
