I have a busted left side case. I have ordered a new one and should get it next week. I wanted to go ahead and split the cases and check everything else. I also want to change the crank bearings for sure. Is there anything I need to know before splitting the cases? Is there a special tool I need? Is there a gasket between them? All info will be greatly appreciated!

there might be a special tool, but what i do is secure it againtst something then just put a peice of wood on somewhere where you can hit it, and bang it evenly on all sides with a hammer. eventually it loosens up

There is a tool to split the cases but like stated above you dont need it. Just when you split it don't hit on the crank, you can throw it out of phase. When you reassemble I like to put the crank in a bag and throw it in the freezer for an hour or so it will slip right into the bearings. As for a gasket there is none, go get your self some yama-bond or 3m #1194 semi drying sealent. You might want to take a peak at the service manual on here I'll see if I can find the link for you.
