97 Blaster Starting Rebuild Could Use Advice

Hi everyone. Glad to join already learned a lot. I have my top end off and started cracking open the bottom. I don't know what's wrong but right off rod has play up and down. Oh yeah I was riding when my machine just died. When I kicked it it started right up but sounded funny. Shut it off immediately. Saw a couple drops of crankcase oil under it. Checked fluid level and it was fine. Also noticed screws holding the black cover 1 missing and couple others were loose. Never started it again and had my bro tow me back. Any advice.

Either get a Clymers Repair Manual or find the download on this site.
Hopefuly you cleaned it well before you started tearing it apart.
IMO, engine work should be under near surgical cleanliness.

Yeah I just picked up the Clymer manual for 8 bucks just happened to be on Craig's list. Glad I got it. Bought a flywheel puller and have that off. Thanks. Do you know what would cause the up and down play. We are assuming it'd be the lower bearings.
Any chance it wouldn't wreak anything else?Just not sure if I need new crank, piston, and bearings or maybe just bearings and rod?I can get Wiseco brand rod and bearings for 80 bucks.

In the manual are the specs for crank. Basically on the u&d play, the tolerance is so small that if you can feel it, it's worn out. Vito's has SS cranks for 113, cheaper than having one rebuilt.

Crank failures can be as simple seized brg to major destruction.

Primarily mentioned it because it's the best deal you're going to find. Only aware of one failure, which might have been operator error
