Hello, i just bought a 1994 Blaster and its not getting a spark to the plug and the key broke off in the ignition so i took if off. but it still wasnt gettin a spark before:o that... also what is the correct plug for it THANKS. P.S. will a 1996 blaster wiring harness fit my 1994 Blaster?:-/??. again THANK YOUI:I

The wiring harness on the 88-00 models is the same (and quite basic!) after 2000 they added a brake light and then after 2003 they changed it all completely and basically nothing but the ignition coil is compatible.

Alright, the first step on this journey is to download the downloadable service manual availabe as a sticky in the "General Support" section of this forum. Someone has graciously supplied it in it's entirety, time to use it!

It includes all of the resistance specifications for the various components of the ignition system in order to be able to do independent checks on the ignition system by using a multimeter. This eliminates the possibility of swapping bad parts onto your quad and getting confused.

There are a few things you really need to check FIRST though. One, pull back the rubber grommet around the base of the spark plug boot and unscrew the boot from the wire. Cut off approximately 3/8" of wire off the end of the spark plug wire itself and then screw the cap back into the wire fully. Inspect the snippet you cut off for any copper corrosion inside the wire.

Also, remove the ignition coil ground (under the seat) and use a wire brush to brush anything under it (between it and the frame) back down to bare metal. This is the ignition system grounding point. Unplug the keyswitch completely from the system and make sure that the black/white wire isn't touching the frame. The ignition system on the blaster is a "open" system where touching a wire to ground shorts out the system and kills the fire. Keeping all of the "kill" wires unhooked from ground means it should fire.

Also, follow the steps in the manual to diagnose a TORS system fault. It's designed to shut off the engine in the event of a throttle cable sticking but it gives MUCH more trouble than throttle cables 8-| You basically unplug both the "box" above the carbruretor and the microswitch inside the thumb throttle housing.

Pulling the connector off the ignition switch will turn it on.

Spark plug is a B8ES.

Harnesses should be the same.

my '01 had no provisions for a brake light, no wiring in the harness, no brake switch at the brake pedal, no mount for it on the frame, nor brake bulbs in the tail light

but i have seen pre 2000's with brake lights on the cable brakes, apparently brake lights were law in the new england states ???

Thank yall, im just gonna order a new wiring harness for it and go from there. and also my plug wire will just barely fit on my plug but it just pops back off so i cant cut off any more from the plug wire....I appreciate it

Interesting. Maybe yours was an '01 frame with pre '00 running gear? Who knows! I know that Minnesota quads and canadian quads have had to have side marker reflectors, brake lights, and mirrors for a while now. No telling what other silly stuff yamaha did on them!

We digress.... back to ignition problems.

Unless the wiring harness is COMPLETELY hacked up, don't bother. Spend that dough on a new replacement coil I:I The harnesses are RARELY the issue with fire problems. The connectors yamaha used aren't state of the art or anything but held up relatively well!

worst case scenario is to untape your harness and check for problems, i had one on my 99 that the triple wire ground connection, the soldered one right after it crosses the frame to under the hood, had worn thru and shorted out to the black/white stripe wire,
drove me nuts for a month till i untaped the harness and found it

The harness is trash, almost all the wires are cut and wrapped around other wires. is there a place where i can find how to eleminate the oil pump/deal to where i can JUST use mixed fuel???

oh yea and will a new ignition switch work (from the local parts store)i had to pull mine out because my brother lost the only key there was :|

take the keyswitch out, or at least disconnect it, it has a black, and black with white stripe wire going to it, just disconnect/cut them and tape them off seperately so they cannot touch each other or the frame
the bike will now use the on/off switch on the bars as the only way to kill it

heres the DIY on oil injection delete...........

then get ya some good brand name 2 stroke oil and mix it 32:1, "maxima super M" is my oil of choice
