400 ex shock on swing arm side ?

z400 shock on swing arm side? updated with pics

just got a 400 ex shock from a board member. i know i need the bushing kit for the top and have to drill the bottom i seen kens video BUT he didnt go into the swing arm side and at first glance i can see where the pin goes though it will have a pretty good amount of space between the swing arm and shock on both sides. what are you guys doing about this? do i leave it or just install a thick washer/spacer on both sides to take up the space EDIT= PICS CHECK SECOND PAGE FOR INSTALL

i dont recall having to use spacers at the bottom on my 450r ???
and would think if they were needed , ken should address them also ???
but washers will work just fine if needed

hummmmmm. can someone measure there 400 shock at the bottom where the pin goes though and see how wide it is ? i am wondering if what i have is really a 400 shock. i say that because the top bushing is in there REALLY good and does not seem to come out like on kens video.

i just put on a 400ex shock today and there is a gap in the mounts on the bottom, washers should be just fine.

There's a recent thread where someone used plastic inserts for the swing-arm mount side of the 400ex. The thinking was the inserts would take up the extra space and prevent the mount holes from elongating.

at the top of the shock the sleeve gets taken out in kens video and he greases it. the shock i got i cant seem to get the sleeve or bushing or whatever its called out to grease it up. it really in there

The bushing has probably just not been serviced before and is stuck. As far as the bottom mount, I just installed my Z400 shock last weekend and it has about 3/16 inch gap on both sides. I have not done anything to fill the gap yet.

strokedtater used the delron type bushings for the bottom

hit that bushing with some pb blaster and let sit for a while

wait i just realized this is the shock u got from me, its not a 400ex its a z400 shock.

well that explains everything, kens video doesnt exactly apply to that shock, just hondas, maybe that bushing isnt meant to come out ????
can you spin it ??? or get a grease gun needle into it to force a lil grease in ????

well that answers alot of questions LOL. so did i mess up buying this shock? its gotta be better then the factory shock i have on it right now LOL. i will have to see what its gonna take to mount it. i will report back soon.

no its a good shock, the 400ex has the gap just like the one you have, all u need is the bushings, throw a washer on each side of the bottom mount and ride the hell out of it.

Super easy to mount. Oconner bushings and bolt at the top. Reuse the original nut. Drill the bottom to 12mm and throw it back in. The rezzie will touch the airbox. If you haven't removed the airbox lid yet you will now. lol. It will not fit back on with the shock unless you cut the snorkle off of the lid.

i agree, that shock will prolly perform as well as the hondas, the mounting seems the same, and i originally cut the snorkel and replaced the lid

I am going to turn my own bushings at work tomorrow out of delrin. took some measurements and we will see how this turns out

OK. so i chose red 1-1/2 delrin i could have turned it down to one inch but didnt. i think it might have looked better if i did but i was cramped for time today at work. here are some pics of what i came up with.
