I went and looked at a 2005 yfz 450 today and had a question about it.. It had been sitting for a month and as soon as he hit the start button it fired right up BUT had a puff a black smoke and then a little white smoke for a few seconds then it didn't smoke at all... He did have the choke on and he said that is what the smoke is from.. Is that normal for a 4 stroke or not?

hard to say.. could be from moisture in the exhaust from sitting, could be coolant.. oil would be more of ablueish gray color... best test for something likethat is.. what did the air smell like.. that will tell you whats burning

Not really. If it was sitting, which it was, then yes it is normal. Its just getting the old oil out. Other than that they shouldnt smoke at all.

hell my 4 stroke is wierd too.....never smokes at all then smokes a bit then go a day with out smoking start it smokes like a freight train then stops and just randomly starts smoking again then stops and so on...

if it has been sittin for over a month without being started once it would be normal, the humidity will cuz the white smoke, for example, when you wash a 4 stroke andwater gets in the exhaust when you starte dits gonna smoke like hell but after it burns all the water in the exhaust it stops
