Im running 14/40 on my blaster, and I want to go down to 14/38. Is this just simple, bolt the sprocket on project, or will I have to mod anything?

i don't either, and this isn't necessarily the right way but i did it with a screwdriver and a dremel....

Im not sure if I understand how that works.

Stock is 13/40. How would removing 2 off the rear equal to adding 1 on the front.

It would be my understanding, 13/42 would be closer to 14/40. And 13/38 would be closer to 12/40.

14/40 is slightly taller than 13/38... 3 in the back=1 in the front

i run a 38t rear and yes you have to mod the sproket hub with a grinder so the chain will clear the hub as it turns

for higher top speed you make the front sprocket larger and the rear smaller. that is why 14/40 is close to the same as 13/38. 14/40 is still a little higher gear.

So it is backward.

I get it now. So, you can raise top speed by doing 1 of 2 things. 1, you UP the front sprocket size. or 2, you DROP the rear sprocket size. Both do the same thing in a way right?

Does anyone know what going 1 inch larger on the rear tires does to gearing?

I bought 23s for mine thinking they would be great on the trails, and they are, but they also have so much damn traction I cant spin em, and sometimes you NEED to be able to spin tires as youre coming out of a turn, so you can rip into your powerband. Mine bogs a bit cause it just has so much damn traction.

I bought a chain/sprocket set and it came with a 14t front, and I put it on, but that REALLY killed my power. I could tell my gears were spaced out farther, but I didnt have enough power to pull through them, it would bog on hills. So I put on a 12t that came with it, and that REALLY helped, and it has all sorts of top end PULL now (I know my overall speed is reduced by the front sprocket being smaller), but it made my lower gears worthless (first on a blaster is worthless anyway, but this made it even worse)

Im thinking I just have too much tire. Im thinking you WANT to be able to slide and spin a little bit. Mine doesnt slide or spin very easily, it just GRIPS, and it keeps from slding into my powerband.

Any advise?

try a 13/40 if that doesn't work try the 12 with a 38 rear. 13/40 is stock and stock tires are really big so that would probably get you where you want to be

Going 1 tooth up front is equal to going down 3 in the rear, you can both drop the rear and up the front it doesn't have to be one or the other.

tires play a huge roll in gearing, a smaller tire reduces the rotational mass thats put on the ground lowering your gearing, going bigger does the opposite.

Then theres also the primary reduction, trans gearing and how high your bike can rev that all determines how tall/low your gearing/speed is.
