here is what i got. its .030 over with trenga carbon reeds, right side pipe k&n no lid with this keihin 28mm pwk. midrange is lean as hell. im on the 3rd clip on needle and get a little sputter around 1/8 - 1/4 throttle when putting around but when wot it revs out to quick in midrange. i can drop the pilot down and get rid of the sputter but its too lean at idle. if i move the clip down on needle the sputter gets worse? so im sure im rich at 1/8 then lean til 3/4 . the needle thats in it is jjh. what should i change? taper, diameter or both?

What main jet size are you running? Thats most likely your problem.
Which right bend pipe?
What year?
Recently rebuilt? Leak tested?

not if the hesitation sputter is at 1/8 - 1/4 throttle and revs too quick thru the mids.
that has nothing to do with a main jet.

the Op is onto what his troubles are...
the pilot/airscrew and that needle.

follow these steps, in this order, for a perfectly jetted carb....

properly clean the carb

check/set float height

adjust airscrew/pilot jet

call carb parts warehouse for a needle, he knows his sh*t and will set you straight on what needle you need for your mods (and pilot/mains too)
Carburetor Parts Warehouse

start rich and plug chop main jet down to perfection

im guessing the carb parts guy is closed today?

this is my wifes bike and she is learning to ride with a clutch so i gotta get it tuned right . previous owner ran it way to lean. it had a 145 main in it and when i chopped it the plug was white as a ghost

the lower circuts..pilot and needle, also contribute to overall jetting, and that lean pilot/needle may have been a factor in that lean plug chop ?
start at the bottom with the float setting and jet up thru the pilot and needle ranges, then plug chop last, you may get different results with that 145 main ?

thats where the carb came from i guess by the cpw sticker on the carb

yep, and possibly jetted for another bike, or stock blaster ?
that right bend trinity (what i run) requires the richest jetting of any of the 5 different pipes i have tested (Trinity, F7, LRD, Dyno-Port and Toomey)

the 145 chop at wot was white and now at 158 is tanish brown ....ive tried as low as a 40 pilot and from the second -4th clips on the needle.....either way im still lean in the mid

my jetting drove me nuts for over a month, until i made that call to CPW, he suggested a "DGH" needle for my 34mm PJ, it's spot on in the middle clip position

follow the link i posted above for tuning the pilot/airscrew circut to find high idle and the correct pilot that "high idles" between 1/2 and 2 turns out. it is the only way

this is what i ride
