I have the 5 screws out, and the cover plate, and all fibers and steels off. The rod is full exposed and both nuts are off. It will not come out. It has about 1/4 inch of slop, but will not come all the way out. I pull on it and I hear it stop as if there is another nut on the inside...

Indeed, I am talking about that. I think the ball is welded to the end of that rod and cocked in such a way as to not let it slide out.
