why do people do it?

The valving doesn't care. The technical reason would be to put the heaviest part higher. This reduces unsprung weight. The real reason people do it is because they think it looks cool.

no thats actually not true. when i bought mine they were upside down, after a few months i realized they were and i switched them. when they are upside down they are really bouncy. i could bounce it like a foot off the ground while it was just sitting there. they also bottom out way too easy. but it is a smoother ride for trail riding. but if you do any kind of jumpig they suck. they bottomed out landing wheelies.

Like phragle said, you should do it to put the heaviest part on the frame so its sprung. The lighter end you put on the a arms because that is unsprung. The valving MUST be able to do that, not all are.

First off, how are you going to question phragle about suspension, and second how the hell does it make it wider dakota? lmao.

flipping wheels makes it wider regardless, you are changing the offset. the only way flipping shocks could physically change your width is if it slightly lowers your front end , meaning the a-arms lie flatter thus are at the peak of their swing radius [widest point if you draw a circle from the mounting point] seeing as the shocks are the same length no matter what way you look at them, the only way that you could make them shorter bearing in mind they are fitted to the same bike [weight] is if the shock was softer whilst at rest allowing it to sag down, maybe you both are right it may SEEM to make the bike wider, and also maybe it does affect the damping, shouldnt do as they are sealed units but then again ive not tried it so...
quit your bitching children and think before you speak, no need to slate each other over what way you fit shocks!!!!
