When to replace header pipe...

Hey Guys,

I picked up an 01 blaster the other day as a parts bike but I'm going to try to get her running. It has a fatty pro pip with some rust on it and slight pitting. I took the pipe off and cleaned it to remove the rust. Now she looks pretty good but I'm worried about putting her on my other blaster.

How does a header pipe function and how would you know if you need a new one? Basically, do they wear out and what are the signs it's time to buy a new pipe? I googled and searched for these answers but could not find it.

Thanks!

If a pipe is severely dented or has holes which will allow gas leakage, it should be replaced!

Bear in mind if you fit it to another bike you may need to change the jetting and confirm with a plug chop.

Yeah, I know about the jetting. The bike I bought for parts has a 300 jet in it. My bike with a dmc pipe has a 260. Do you think a fatty pipe is better than a dmc pipe? What makes a pipe good?

Both pipes are about equal, power wise. A good pipe is one that fits well, works well with your engine mods, and delivers the power you want, where you want it.

I know Blaaster raves about the DMC

DMC imo is way better.

260 sounds lean though
Power wise both pipes are similar, DMC has the edge on quality and a leak free fit up.

#260 does seem lean to me as well, I have found the DMC Alien to be thirsty up to 3/4 throttle and needing the needle richened up.

At sea level, this may help.

DMC = #260 main jet.

Aftermarket air cleaner + 1 or 2 size larger.

Air box lid off +2

32:1 pre mix +1

Stock Needle in the bottom slot, or up one.

32.5 pilot jet

Plug chop to confirm, as temperature, elevation and humidity come into the equation.

Thanks Blaaster. That's an awesome guide. I'm usually over a mile above sea level so I'll have to adjust for that. I think I'm gonna leave the DMC on since the bike is running well. I just want to get this parts bike running. I'm very confident that the reason it will not start is due to weak or no spark. I ordered a CDI and ignition coil so hopefully that will work.

you can use aluminum foil and water and it will shine it up nice.you will need the flange as well if you swap the pipe over.Pipes are mad for either low to mid or mid to high. You need to choose what you want more low end or top end :) I had the fmf and i liked it :) i had the toomeyB1 as well and that one is def a top end pipe.I prefered the fmf over the toomey ..
