VF3 Reeds Leaking

did you use new gaskets? putting a little rtv on those gaskets when you put it together is advisable.

I used RTv on my V2 and seemed to work ok so far. The V3 i thought are suppose to be three piece the innner cage (part that the reedpetals are on) the outer cage (the part the inner cage sit in) and a special boot piece that holds it all together. I still have yet to find a pic of it.

The bike was completely stock before it started running like sh*t and only had 100 pounds of pressure :(. So we tore it apart and put new rings, vf3 reeds, and gaskets (and yes I used new gaskets on the reeds but no rtv). The bike ran great for the break in and a couple more days. Then it started running like sh*t again. So I used my grandpas aviation leakdown tester and it wasnt holding air. It was leaking from the reeds. I also did another pressure test and it is only 85 now.

We changed the plug, cleaned the carb, cleaned the air filter, and removed and reinstalled the reeds (there still leaking). Nothing has helped. What is wrong? Can the reeds leaking be this big of a problem or is there something else too?

The bike will start right up when its cold and idle. But the when I give it gas it revs good but when I release it and try to rev again it boggs down and dies. Then its nearly impossible to start again untill it sits forever.

Please help.

Are you using the stock intake boot? That may be the problem.

We used everything that came in the box with the vf3's. I'm not sure what the intake boot is. Sorry. What part is it or where is it located? I dont know much about this stuff. My grandpa always helps me. He's the mechanic.

well i hate to say it, but if you've been running it with that air leak you may need to do the top end again

tear it apart, and put a little rtv on the gaskets, put it back together, and redo the leak test

do NOT i repeat do NOT run it with an air leak or you WILL burn it up

Can I use rtv on the head gasket (the metal one), base gasket, and the reed cage gaskets?

just do the reed cage, the others should be fine, so long as you have been checking the torque on the base studs and head studs

I'm going to open up the top end again to check and make sure its all good. When I'm puting it back together can I put rtv on the head gasket, and base gasket? Or do I need new ones?

I have been checking the torque.

Thanks

you should put a new base gasket and head gasket in if you tear it down. i would fix your air leak and stuff and then check the compression etc again

Cool. I'll put new ones in but can I use rtv on both of them to help it be air tight?

Thanks again bro.

i don't on the base and head gaskets, but the reed cage gaskets seem to leak on almost everyone's, so i put it there and its stayed sealed up well so far

First I absolutely would not use rtv on the intake!rtv and gas don't mix and if you read the package vthey don't recommend using it on or around fuel systems.as for the vf3s leaking I've not had any issues with mine.are you sure you trimmed that nub off the intake boot good enough and that its not leaking from there?I have a spare engine so I mocked it up on a bench before installing and had to trim a few times to get it perfectly flush.id check there first and stay away from using rtv on the intake.

I'll check the nub thing. I remember when we cut it off that the way the washers and bolts held it together made it leave some behind. Should it be completely flat?

Thanks

It should be as flat as you can get it.I took a hobby knife to mine and had to trim a few times to get it flat.do you have another set of reeds cage and all to swap in for diagnostics?

Do you think Its ok to use Permatex Aviation-Form-A-Gasket? Its gas resistant.

If it specifically i s made for fuel then yea it couldn't hurt.but in all seriousness it should shouldn't need it.plus it looks ghetto and honkey engineered.lol
