how do you know when you need a new top end? what are the symptoms.

id do a compression test

You have to check your compression. I think compression guages are $30 at Sears Hardware. Compression should be at 110-120. I had to take my gas tank off to check my compression.

a good sign of when you have a need for a topend ,if you can easily push your kickstart down with your hand it is time to check the compression
