The piston in my 2001 blaster burned up and a piece broke off I think it's in the case the piston arm has side to side play is this ok or do I need to rebuild the bottom end as well????

you'll need to split the cases to remove the broken pieces, if you can get them all, if not...you're new top end will fry again when, not if, the bottom end eventually goes due to the shrapnel down in there, once it's apart, at least new main bearings and seals is a no brainer, a new lower rod bearing would be smart too, but can be chanced if you see or feel no grit in that bearing while rotating it.

you'll also want to thoroughly inspect the cases themselves for damage when the crank chewed up and jammed the piston skirt into them
even a crack down there will cause a major airleak and again....fry your new top end.

a full rebuild is the best insurance against future damage and wasting $
