Toomey db level

Too loud

Before we bought a dB meter I put a diffuser in the center of the core to direct the exhaust into the packing as it was too loud. Similar to the 'glass pack' of the muscle car era. It made it noticeably quieter. Doing the sound test we followed the procedure from the AMA, 20 inches away, at like a 45 degree angle in 'A' scale, calculated some number determined from stroke to come up with an RPM to do the test and we got 100 dB. 3k rpm maybe? It was louder the way it comes out of the box but I didnt measure it then. It still doesnt meet our (AMA) requirements, so I will need to do more to it.

"The plan calls for reducing the allowable standard to 98 dB(A) for 2008, 97 dB(A) for 2009 and 96dB(A) for 2010.

dbd13, the diffuser you put in the core was it a solid cone or did you have it perferated, also does it cause to much back pressure to change jetting? I tried to put the stock blaster silencer on the toomey pipe and it was still very loud, It seems to get a lot of sound from the pipe itself as the wall thickness is thin and you hear the high pitch ting/ting. do you think it would help to wrap the pipe to dampen the sound?

I wouldn't wrap anything on the pipe. I didnt want to use the stock silencer and loose any gains we made with the pipe. To experiment you could use a carriage bolt to act as a diffuser to listen to the sound levels. I used 1 solid diffuser in the middle of the core. It didn't change anything in the jetting, still have the 310 or the one it came with. We played with jetting and the best was the one that came with it. Trying to do this so it doesn't add backpressure or effect performance. They would be measuring sound as it exits the pipe, any sound coming thru the pipe walls I don't think would count. I will experiment more with different silencers from other bikes, and more diffusers.
