I just picked up a 01 Blaster this week and I'm trying to learn as much about it as I can. Over all it's in pretty good condition, previous owner bought it in 02. He told me that it took a long time to warm up and it smokes a little heavy until it does. a little background, totally stock, still running oil injection using Lucas oil and 93 octane. I replaced spark plug checked the air filter and then checked the compression and got 115. Anything else I should check out or do to kinda baseline it. Thanks in advance.

The most important thing that you could possibly do and need to do before starting it again is a LEAKDOWN TEST. You can make a tester from the DIY on here or buy one from @Awk08.

roger that. Am I checking for bad crank seals? For got to mention that it runs real strong with plenty of power and as soon as it warms up good the exhaust smoke is very minimal, about what it should be.

You are checking for air leaks in the complete engine assembly!

It is quite normal for smoke when it is cold, then clearing as it warms up.

About 5, I am only basing it being slow off a RT180 that i have which only takes a couple minutes and I know the motors are somewhat similar. I'm new to this so maybe that's really not slow. I was shocked at how strong it runs with a lot of grunt. If you don't give it about 5 minutes it won't clear out good. Thanks for all the input

Oh, the previous owner which has owned it since 2002 said he has never had the top end rebuilt or replaced the reeds.

Also I just had my WHOLE engine rebuilt by the best builder in the biz and if I were to not warm it up it would also not run right. Proper warm ups are important for longevity of your engine life.

is the 2 stroke oil suitable for injection?
some of them are pre mix only.
115 psi is a tiny low it should read 120 psi or more:)
5 min warm up time is very normal.
almost every two stroke i have owned will stutter during warm up
or first few feet/after idleing and blips :)

Thanks a bunch for all the feedback! I will do a leak down. I have to get front tires and if the leak down test checks out it should be good to go. I'll try and post some pics tomorrow.

Here she is in all her glory

All good advice^^^ it should be mentioned to occasionally blip the throttle while warming up, incase you don't know. I normally try to warm every engine I own for at least 5 minutes before putting a load on it! 115 is not the greatest, but its dam good if its still the original bore.

Yeah I was pleased when I saw 115 knowing that the previous owner had never had the top end rebuilt. I would have liked higher but expected lower.
