so i have been doing some reasearch about porting and so on but i cant seem to find what im looking for. my question is; if an engine was built for drag racing , as in all the goodies, port, big bore kit, stroker crank, big carb, all that. would it be possible to also run it for a long period of time, say i had a wide open place to ride around, and be reliable enough to only have to rebuild it no more than once a year?
hopefully my question makes sense to somebody.

The biggest causes for concern on a drag motor for reliabilty are what the exhaust port widths are and overheating depending on compression and head design. Depending on the builder it may or may not be a machine that can be ridden for long periods of time...there are too many variables to give you a definate answer on this one...sorry.

If you are looking into building one that can be used dual purpose for the occasional drag/grudge race and also be reliable and ridden for long periods of time you should consider an aggressive dune/dune drag type porting. Not quite as aggressive as full drag porting but can still hold it's own quite well.

thanks wildcard
i guess what i was thinking was for use as speed heavy trails
i ride at killington mountain and the trails are balls to the wall fast, they're ski trails btw.
the answer you gave me helps me out with what i needed

there is no universal ansewer ,if it is setup correctly it should be able to be ridden hard for extended periods as for the most part reliability comes down to the owner ,if you dont break it in right use the right jetting the right piston head carb ect.or the right insurance mods(for lack of a better phrase) for the power, it can bite you down the road and even more so of a factor on a full tilit engine than a mild one
