Well, I have a friend who has been trying to get rid of his '02 Raptor and lately I've been more and more interested in buying it. It's in great shape, and I've ridden it a couple of times and it seems really powerful. I just wanted to ask the Blaster community what they think about Raptors, and what is your overall opinion. How are they out on the trails?

there is a few guys on here with raptors im sure they will chime in

from my experiance riding one they are a tad bit top heavy but with a little lowering kit i think that would help

Yes it's a 660. I have also heard they are pretty top heavy. How fast are they compared to the 450s or other bikes?

Woops, didnt even see that one thanks YB. People doubt the raptors in alot of ways and people think they are the biggest pos every made by yamaha. Like any quad first being manufactured they are going to have problems. 01 and 02 raptors have transmission problems. Most of the time reverse and second gear get lost. You can fix that problem by splitting the bottom end and installing yukon gears. If you have ever met someone with a raptor 660, you can bet they have replaced the stock starter one way it just a common problem with them. With an aftermarket one way youll be fine. Ive never had a problem with my in the 2 years Ive owned. They are top heavy a little bit, but if you know how to handle it, youll be fine. The torque is insane and I have yet to find another quad with the same torque. They are fast bike, but like any bike, take good care of it, and it will take care of you.

Like I said, it all how you can handle the bike, as for me, I wouldnt trade my 660 for anything. They are pretty fast bikes. I can hang with my friends yfz all day drag or track but thats because of my suspension set up. Its all on how you ride.

Thanks for the great response. I wasn't aware that '02s also had transmission problems, for some reason I thought that was only in '01s. And you're right about the torque, I was amazed at the power when I first rode it.

01s are the worst with the transmissions. 02s are much better but 03-06 are the best. Now dont let me turn you down away from this, if it shifts SMOOTH, reverse goes in reverse smooth, and the power feels right you should be fine. Raptors can be a tad bit tricky to get into reverse so if it doesnt click right away, its normal. Best mods to really make the thing rip, pipe, jet kit, filter, and 12/40 gearing. I remember the first time I rod my raptor, the torque scared the sh*t out of me. Now that I have my rear link flipped and the aftermarket front suspension, it handles like a dream and doesnt come up as much, but just the punch of the throttle and it wants to come up. I love it.
