My buddy just picked up a running blaster for $200 and it has a problem kicking over. It bump starts fine, but when you kick it it only cycles the piston once instead of 2 or 3 times like it should. do you guys have any idea what could cause this?
did u check w a compression tester, sounds like u might need a rebuild, or ur cylinder is warped, thats why its hard to start when cold, but as it heats up the cylinder expands and starts easier!
No it's just that it doesn't kick completely. I know what you are saying, but it is that it just isn't kicking over completely. I don't know how to explain it any better. On my blaster you hear the intake and exhaust strokes a few times but on my buddies you kick it and you can only hear the exhaust and intake once. Also, the kick doesn't start in the exhaust stroke, it starts on the intake stroke, where mine is opposite.
Edit: Oh and I checked with a compression tester, my foot
Yup haha. Seriously though I don't think it needs a rebuild, something in the kickstart just sounds messed up but I have no idea what. That is where you guys come in
Sounds to me like your piston has some added resistance in the cylinder, maybe extra scratches, or the edge of the piston started to melt over, and its enough resistance that it wont go any further than one like you are talking. When I blew my top end, and tried to kick it, it did the same thing, sounded like it was only revolving once, sure enough piston was screwed.
Not saying thats it, but thats what came to my mind when I read your post.
It sounds like you are trying to say there is a problem with the kick starter. Take the bolt off and reposition it on its shaft. If someone was messing with it and didnt set it in the right place it will do exactly what you are explaining, I didnt have it rotated up far enough after a clutcht replacement and instead of making a 'putt putt putt' sound when i kicked it, it made a 'putt pugh' sound. I repostioned it and now it works fine.
Just take the bolt off, then take the kick starter off and rotate it clockwise a little bit then put the bolt back on. If that doesn't work you may have to take the clutch cover off and trouble shoot the mechanism itself.
all you guys with your piston thoughts. maybe the kick start gear is missing some teeth or the spring isnt pulling the gear to the starting position, therefor, not geting a full stroke. when i first got mine, it only did like 1 or 2 strokes when i kicked it, same kinda deal, i just adjusted the kick arm so you had more turn in it. (take it off and turn forward a couple teeth, whatever you thinks enough)
