Hey guys. I just baught a 2004 blaster that needed a top end overhaul. Just to clean any crud out of the crankcase, I filled it with fuel too let sit for a while. For some reason the crankcase was not "watertight". The fuel leaked out into the transmission. Is this normal? I though the crankcase was completely sealed off from the transmission.

That is NOT normal. You either have a bad seal between the case halves or you have a broken case....

As it is sometimes on engines "that just need a top end" the piston probably came apart and broke the case out. I fix them all the time like that....

Major problem or learning experience:) Case halves seem to be fairly cheap on Ebay. I have never separated a case, but I can probably figure it out.

I've had a mixed bag of results from case halves on Ebay. Sometimes they're good and sometimes they're bad. I developed a method to use my tig welder to weld cast aluminum due to the frustration from busted cases. Most welding shops won't mess with cast aluminum and even welders who are adept at nearly every type of welding out there are lost when it comes to welding this cast stuff.

Splitting case halves isn't terribly difficult. You will need a few tools to do it right...

You need a fylwheel puller (cheap) and a flywheel/clutch holder (also fairly cheap) in addition to several "regular tools" like an impact screwdriver, socket set, snap ring pliers, and impact gun.

In addition to those, in order to do it RIGHT (and have the flexibility to do almost any ATV/motorcycle bottom end) you'll also need a crank puller (tusk brand is ~$60) and a case splitter (tusk brand is also ~$60).

Could be a simple case of a bad crank seal on the gear side!
