which way do the piston rings go when you are installing new piston and rings?

there should be to bumps in the piston ring slots on the piston itself.
when putting rings on the gaps in the rings should line up with these two points.
also make sure the arrow on top of the piston is facing the front of the machine

there are notches out of the gap, and the notch goes down.
