is there any real disadvantage to just removing the gear from the oil pump and allowing the rod to spin rather than installing the actual block off plate?

once the gear is removed, nothing is going to spin, and thats the purpose of removing the gear....to keep a dry pump from spinning, possibly locking up ?
IMO...there is no advantage of either method...just removing the gear and leaving the pump to block it off, or using a plate, homemade or bought, to block it off.
both accomplish the same thing.
