Ok, here's the challenge. My 2002 Blaster is stock, and I wanted to add a few mods to make it more suited for woods riding, but my budget is limited to say $750. (Less if possible)

Here's the run down:
  • My tires are ok for now. Right rear has a slow leak, but I think it's the bead or valve stem. I've got to look into it.
  • The suspension is OK, but could use a bit of freshening up. I'm looking into banshee/400ex components.
  • The plastic and seat are in good shape. Maybe a seat cover down the road.
  • The engine runs pretty strong. No complaints
  • The brakes are crap. I think it's because of the minor issues of no adjusters and no mounting bolts.
  • The lighting is crap due to cut wires on the socket, and no bulb. I'll replace with OEM for now, then upgrade later.
  • The frame where your legs rub and the fronts of the A-arms are worn to bare steel and beginning to surface rust.

I figure I'll start with all the misc missing bolts and nuts to see where I am with the brakes and levers. Then I was going to decide whether I wanted to rip it down to bare frame and A-arms and have them powder coated or just primer/paint them. The powder coating will eat the majority of my funds.

Where would you start?

sounds like your complaints are rust, brakes and lights..
the lights id get from walmart for 15 bucks the bulbs are like 6 bucks cause you need
20w bulbs.
brakes you can get the cable brakes to work good, hydro brakes are of course the best upgrade.
frame i would pc it over painting but you can paint it also..

yeah, those are my complaints exactly. More in the order of brakes, rust, lights.

What's a hydro brake conversion cost? I haven't spent much time looking into them yet. I do know I want the shorty cable off ebay, and once I get the proper mounting bolts for the caliper, I'll see how I like the stock cable brakes before upgrading.

What's it cost to powder coat a frame and a-arms on average? I'm sure it varies from place to place but ballpark it should be about the same.

As for lights, I don't plan to do much night wheeling. Although, they're always nice to have in case a ride runs late or I take it camping. I do have some nice low watt/amp draw LED lights I use on my Jeep for back up lights. I'm going to check into maybe mounting them up to see how they'll work. Is there anything I should be concerned with burning out if they draw too much wattage? I doubt they will, but it's better to have replacement part on hand just in case.

Cool. I'll look more into it. Maybe that would be better than spending any money on the oem set up.

Where and how do you mount the hydro reservoir?

Also, what about front brakes? are the 88-02 inferior to the 03-06? Is there a better option available?
