Josh from College Station TX here. I just picked up a 2002 Blaster for dirt cheap.

The Good: Its got a Toomey Pipe and its 95% there.
The Bad: No rear wheels.
The Ugly: I'm pretty sure the motor is locked up.

I haven't even got it home yet to start taking it apart. I'm going to try the Mystery Oil trick first before I take the jug off and see if it breaks loose. I'm looking forward to this build as its my first quad project. I've looked around and have seen some of your machines, I hope I don't get the mod bug and start modding the crap out of it. I'm just looking to get it together and keep it cheap.

Welcome bro, looks like you got alot of work. You should post it in the full rebuild section and keep us up to date and informed on your progress..If you have any problems or questions just ask, WE are here to help..I:I

Welcome, hope ya free it up, if you do, run premix (32:1) until you know the oil pump is working (if it's still there) Blasters seize up for many reasons but that is a BIG one. Better yet, just get rid of it, you can just unhook it & plug the port where it goes into the carb, or you can get a kit to block it off also. If ya get it running & hear knocking don't keep running it (usually piston slap) Blaster piston skirts break pretty easily & that will ruin your day,(and motor). It's pretty easy to take the cylinder off & have a peek at what's going on if ya have to. Good luck & let us know how it's going once in a while! :)

welcome bro, and around here we call it coming "down with the sickness"
and dont worry, hang out here for any length of time and you'll be "down" too

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I'm heading home from work now to start disassembling it. I'm calling it "Project Ghetto Blaster" because I literally had to go into the ghetto to pick it up.

Might wanna run the VIN# before you do someone else a favor, lol :o :D

Ok I got the blaster home and went to work. I decided to take the jug off because the mystery oil I poured in came straight out of the exhaust port. I'm glad I did because I got to take a look at the cylinder, top of the piston and rings. Which all look good to go! It's seized at the crank. The bottom end is taking a nice long soak in some mystery oil. I won't know if I have fire for a day or two. (if she busts loose) I'm really happy with the rest of it though...suspension all looks good, breaks don't look bad, carbs look good, it's got a k&n filter in it so I'm hoping it's jetted for the pipe(fingers crossed). Looks like it's time to move this thread to the rebuild section.

Try taking your clutch cover off and looking in there, sometimes it's a clutch or gear issue that will lock it up. Your crank might be good!

I hear you man. I just went back after about an hour (patients is not my strong suit) and managed to pop it loose! I got it to turn a whole revelation, then it stuck again and i didn't want to push my luck. I'm freaking pumped! I'll let it soak tonight, hopefully tomorrow it will kick over freely.

Sweet, like I said check that clutch, sometimes a piece of metal from the disks or basket will get in the gears & jam it up. Good luck, sounds like your on a roll! I:I

Well I got home today hoping for the best but it's bad news. I took a closer look at the piston and discovered a small crack and a gash that I didn't notice last night. I can work the crank around with the kick starter now but not freely. After a few revolutions I noticed metal shavings floating up in the oil bath I was soaking it in. So this is going to require a full rebuild, top and bottom. I'll check around on prices to see if I want to put that kind of money into it. Any ideas on what im looking at? I might do a motor swap. My buddy has an ex500 motor laying around...hmmm.
