Butler, PA
Hey all, new guy here from Butler, PA. My wife has a Blaster at her family's farm and I've been working on it for over a year. I've been working out of a Clymer repair manual and everything has been going well so far. Had the motor completely rebuilt with new clutch, transmission, piston, piston rod, bearing, gasket set etc... Now my only problem... it won't start. I have air, spark and fuel, good compression and a handfull of new plugs. My next step is to eliminate all of the wiring except for the coil, CDI box and magneto. Seems pretty simple. Someone already removed the TORS, but left all the wiring hanging around. I can't wait to ride this thing again! My wife and I blew out the clutch last summer, and it turns out the jug was crap anyway. The new jug is .010" overbore and I'm planning on getting a new carb and reeds at some point. With the new bore size, will the carb need to be adjusted? I left everthing the same since the motor was taken out in October.

welcome to the forum, try giving battbike a pm, he wired his with nothing but the stator and cdi, as far as the carb, if it ran good then it should run good now, lose the airbox lid also

Funny you should mention the airbox lid. Someone drilled large holes in the lid, but left it on. I was thinking about just getting rid of it. I just put a new air filter in last week.

Your from Butler...Do you race at all? Are you near Switchback? I won my last race there! It has been a while, but I remember it like yesterday! That same night my wife "yamahagirl522" entered her first race and got second place. It was a good night!!

Yeah, I live like 15 minutes from Switchback, but I don't race. I've only really just roamed around my wife's family's farm last summer, it was the first time I ever rode a quad. I instantly fell in love with it, the most fun I've had in a long time. When her blaster broke down, it gave me the perfect opportunity to dig in to it and see what it can really do. I can't wait to get out on it again.

Update

I finally got around to working on the Blaster today. I completely rebuilt the carb, it seemed to be the only thing left to do, as it still wouldn't start. As soon as I installed the carb, it fired right up. With a little tinkering I got it to run moderately well. Since the oil pump was removed I put a gallon of pre-mixed gas and 2-stroke in the tank and proceeded to break it in. Now another problem. Damn thing won't idle without me giving it a tiny bit of gas. I tried adjusting the throttle cable, but then all it wants to do is race. It's blowing thick white smoke, which I thought was a sign that it's burning lean. I tightened the screw that's closest to the intake, on the left side, the one that's at an angle. Clockwise is supposed to be rich and counter-clockwise is supposed to be lean. It's still blowing the smoke, and I still can't get it to idle. I checked the float measurement, as well as the main jet, and I think it should be ok, but I can't quite figure it out. After 8 hours of tinkering I gave up for the night. Any ideas?

Damn really? It doesn't smell like I'm burning oil. When I'm going down the road and the engine is in the sweet spot, it just blows a nice light blue like smoke. After I let it run for about 20 minutes, I let it sit for about an hour, then took it for a slow run down the road. I let it sit again, then took it for a slightly faster ride, going through all of the gears. I changed out the oil and it didn't look contaminated or anything. No metal shavings and no grit from the clutches. Anything in particular I should be looking for?

hmm maybe when it sits it leaks into the crank case then it will burn it off when you let it run maybe?., most of the time the crank seal just leaks and you replace it and good to go..
