Hey i was looking at buying a 2001 Blaster. The guy wants $350 for it, but he said it needs a piston and ring. Is this a good deal should i jump on it? What else should i change with the piston and ring? Im just now getting into 4 wheelers so this will be my second 4 wheeler. Im very mechanically inclined so i dont mind doing the work myself but just wondering if this would be worth it.

Thank you in advance

It all depends on the condition of the other parts, if everyhing else seems ok then I think it could be a reasonably good buy.

I gotta decide. I wanna look at it but was just trying to get an opinion from people that have them before making a purchase. say the skirt did fall roughly how much would i be looking at replacing?

If the skirt has dropped then a motor rebuild would be in order, and repair of, or new cases.

Look at it this way, you could get more than your money back if you parted it out.

I just dont know how much demand for parts are down here. ANd if he could make more money parting it out then why not just part it out?

Some people just want rid of.

If it were me I would get it i the other parts look good, as a mechanically minded as you are you could fix it up.

Good tyres are worth a few hundred alone.

if the blaster is in good shape, plastic, tires, seat, frame etc etc then i would jump on it for $350. take it home and pull it apart and educat your self a little bit on the motor and if the motor is reparible then a top end rebuild shouldnt cost you much more then $250. if the motor is junk then take the good parts out of the motor and part it out. or find a used motor on craigslist or ebay. either way $350 is pretty dang cheap

I dont think the tires are in the best of shape. he said something about the skirt dropping from the piston on the phone. Also he said he would recommend changing the bearings on the crank and splitting the case open to do a flush. just talked to him on the phone about it.

The motor looks like it needs a full rebuild or replacement,

I actually just did two complete rebuilds of Blaster motors. A Hot rods complete bottem end kit is about $230 plus the cost of a new piston and getting the head Bored. I also had to get new cases for one of my bikes, guy put a Vito's 240 kit in it and it blew up. But I kept an eye out and actually bought a complete lower end for $40 bucks. The deals are out there, you just have to be tireless in looking for them. I have plenty of spare parts as I am always on the hunt and really like the 2 stroke bikes. If you plan on keeping the bike for a while then fix it up and you know that it's in good working order and exactly what has been done. If you are just looking for a quick buck, probably won't make to much on a bike that already has a destroyed motor.

I don't know about parting. I see lots of pieces floating around on Ebay. Overall condition will dictate wether it's worth it. Look at the bottom of engine real close for breakage/cracking, even if you have to stand it up on the grab bar. By knowing prices of fixing you should be able to beat him up a bit. I'd start at 250. If he doesn't bite, give him your # and walk away.
