Installing a chain

Hi all... brand new quad owner... first time and I have a 98 blaster.

I was riding yesterday in a cornfield and my chain broke off... the sprokets are newer, not many hours on them at all...

I need to buy a new chain obviously, and I think I can handle the install... is there a step-by-step or maybe a picture of how it should look in the end?

I see there are guides there and rollers, not sure where it goes over, under, etc.

DOn't want to screw it up and I don't want to waste $100 having a bike shop do it.

Any suggestions?

all you need to do is get the right legth chain(they sell by the link) its a 520 chain for a blaster, but if its stock, i dont know how many links, someone else will know on here. but all you do is put it through the slider(under the swingarm close to the rear sproket) over the rear sproket up between the top of the swingarm between the roller and glide, then over the front sproket, under the swingarm between the roller and glide. its straight forward, you should be able to just do it by looking at it. then you gota get the masterlink on. dont know how to describe it, but just put it all togtehter, get the little plate on with 1 peg in between it and tap it on with a small hammer and punch it should click on the 2 pins and be in there tightly.

Thanks guys... seems simple enough... no special tools or anything? Will i need to take the wheel off if I'm just installing the chain?

and also is there any way to raise the bike to it has a bit more clearance? thicker tires?

taller tires will raise up the ATV stock size is 21x10x8. as for the special tools on the chain, the r$25 spent on a chain press tool was definately worth the money. its designed to press together the master link and makes the task much easier than trying to use a hammer or pliars.

once th echain is installed, you dont want it to be tight. adjust it so that there is about 2 inches of up and down slack on it at the bottom of the chain half way between the front and rear sprocket. if its too tight, it will break again.

it probably wouldnt hurt to ge tthe whole chain and sprocket kit. if those sprockets are worn and you put a new chain on them, you just cut the life of the chain drastically. you can get a kit for right around $100 that comes with an o-ring chain, front, and rear sprocket.

I'm headed to the shop today to grab a sprocket/chain set for $100 and I'll definately get the press... anything to make my life easier.

What size tires would be best to raise it up so it won't bottom out in the woods so much?

ok.. a step by step

if you are changing both sprockets and chain

1. remove front left side engine cover. no new gaskets needed here
2. remove the 2 bolts that hold the sprocket keeper in place and then twist the keeper 90 degrees and it will come off. the sprocket should be free and will fall off the shaft then.
3. remove left rear wheel and put the ATV on some type of stand.
4. remove the 6 or so bolts that hold the rear sprocket in place and then slide the sprocket off of the axle.
5. re-install new sprockets with the writing/stamping facing outboard on the front sprocket.
6. the chain will pass through the guide on the bottom of the swing arm, around the rear sprocket and in a straight line to the front sprocket. it will rest on the top of the swing arm and go under the top roller thats mounted on the frame. wrap it around the front sprocket and bring it back to the rear on the underside of the swing arm to meet up with the other end of the chain.

this is where the chain press comes in handy. simply connect the two ends of the chain with the master link. be sure to install the rubber o-rings on each side of the link before you press the plate on. once they are installed just simply press the plate on with the press tool and connect the keeper to the outside of the plate. the keeper should be installed so that the normal rotation of the chain will push against the keeper if something snags on it.

if i have forgotten something guys, please feel free to chime in here. im going my memory and not looking at my blaster.

fyi, this worked perfectly... the site went down just before I got a chance to do it but luckily I remembered a bunch and was able to get the chain on there...good slack when I'm on it, so that should be fine. I've lubed it and am ready to go for my first real ride this afternoon...

Thanks everyone... and I'm, still looking for 21s for the back!

the chain you got wasnt pre lubed??? The gold link chain i bought for mine was pre greased and messy haha

In order to pull the rear sprocket off the axle you have to set the blaster on something where the rear tires are off the ground then take the 4 bolts off the hub that hold the left rear tire on and then pull the tire off then the sprocket will slide right off...

U forgot to add that part I:I

THanks guys... this worked perfectly... the chain has too much slack right now, so I may shave another link or so off and see how goes it... I need to clean it anyway.

But this helped immensely!
