i'm thinking that it is time to put my dog down. he has gained 11 lbs in the last month and doesn't leave his bed. we took him to the vet and they did a bunch of blood work for thyroid problems. it came back as a healthy thyroid. his red blood cell count is waaaaaaay down. he is only 5 years old! the vet bill just for the blood work with pet insurance was $1050. we're going to see a dog disease specialist and see what he thinks. he will drink but then he will throw it up right after. i'm worried that it might be cancer. i love this dog. he has been through so much with me. have any of your dogs ever had any symptoms like these? i dont want toby to leave me before he needs to.:(

its amazing what it costs to see a vet , I shudder when I take my cat to the vet , he's a Himalayan and they get sinus infections easy because they have almost no sinuses to begin with , and the passages are so restricted that they don't drain like on a different cat , plus ear problems ( 800 bux ) to open his ear canal on the left side due to skin growths ( not cancerous but blocks the ear canal and makes it uncomfortable for him ) sorry to threadjack , but Just letting you know we all go through it with pets . I've always looked at it like this , Its only money , yeah easier said than done , but priorities are priorities and Family is Family , 2 legged or 4 . Do what you have to , if that means sh*tty lunches for a few months to save money , or taking the bus versus driving , or sh*t , selling some stuff to cover it , then so be it . Good luck , I hope your bud will be ok .

That sucks dude. We had to put our dog down last april.

Sucks to dig a hole and bury your dog, they become a part of your family and even if it wasn't the greatest in the world it still hurts to lose it... I still jump when I hear a screech thinking its our dog, or when I get home from work/town I still wanna open the door and find her waiting for me to let her out. :(

I hope its just a small problem and your dog will have more years of life ahead :)

thanks everyone. btw he is a viszla. he is a bird dog. i can't even think about burrying him in the back yard. makes me cry thinking about it

Stay strong dude. He knows you love him. As hard as it is to do, I would rather put a dog down than have him suffer till his dying day. I hope he gets better, dogs are truly mans best friend.

yeah man it does. i dont want to sound like a wimp but whenever i walk by his bed i start to tear up. he is my bud. i dont know how else to put it

man i feel for you i always get a little choked up thinking about people losing a furry friend. i love my dog to death, he's been my buddy since we brought him home from the pound

well i spoke with the vet on the phone. they said that his red blood cell count is going up. thats a good thing. so its not an immune system disorder. i did some research and i came across a disease that has matched all of his symptoms. it is called lymphoma. it affects middle aged dogs and is curable through chemotherapy. i dont want to put my dog through that though. it IS a form of cancer. but there are 4 more diseases that it could be. i really want to speak to this specialist on dog diseases.
