I was out riding on the gravel roads the other night and all of the sudden the back tires locked up, so I pulled in the clutch, it slowed to a stop, and died. It started on the second kick and then there was a rattle. I drove home, slowly, the rattle is in the Engine or Carburetor, can't tell. I replaced engine oil thinking something may be grinding. Any ideas on what this mysterious rattle may be?

could be a piston skirt broke, piston slap, flywheel came loose and rattling around, or something in the clutch side.

start by taking the flywheel cover off, clutch cover to investigate in there, and then the exhaust to look up in for broken piston skirt

Should any of this have happened if I just had it rebuilt?

thats a good time for a flywheel or clutch related to come loose, someone may have overlooked tightening something, not used a torque wrench and proper torque specs.

it should not have broken a piston skirt on a new rebuild, or you got hoodwinked by an amatuer builder.

Thank you for your help!!

if something broke in top end you should be able to see metal/aluminum shaving.
in the exhaust or reed side of cylinder/or spark plug hole summin.
but if it was stator side or clutch side it will be more difficult to take apart things lol
could be summin very small overlooked

Could a large bit of gravel have hit hard enough to crack the crankcase?

If so an air leak could have created enough heat to swell a piston in the bore.

Take the exhaust pipe off and look up the exhaust port for signs of piston damage!
