i know i need to torque my yamaha blaster 02 yfs200 flywheel nut to "54 ft.lb" but can i use a impact wrench? or do i need a torque wrench?I:I

I use loctite and my impact gun every time I've put my flywheel back on and have never had a problem. Just don't go to crazy with the impact gun or you could strip the nut/bolt OR round out the nut ! Anything that calls for low ft. lbs. should definitely be tightened with a torque wrench tho.

I always use an electric impact gun (DeWalt 18 volt) and a rubber strap wrench to get flywheels off. Reverse process with a torque wrench to put them back on.

No Loctite is needed, it is not the nut that keeps the flywheel on it is the interference fit of the taper.

If you use an impact gun and Loctite, you are courting disaster as the next time you need to remove the flywheel the flywheel removal tool may not be man enough to do the job.
That Loctite can provide enough lubrication to allow the nut to be put on to over 100 ft lbs with an uncontrolled impact wrench, more than enough to stretch the threads on the crankshaft and stuff it up.

Just ask me how I know, I can write a book on problems caused by impact gun versus the correct method ( Tension wrench)

so i should use a tension wrench? i just bought a toque wrench D: and im getting a new air filter and some of that oil u reccommended thanks btw :)

really? what went wrong? hows it going?

The key got jammed behind the flywheel, thought the motor was seized. The crankshaft threads are stripped. So I ordered a tap and die set to re-thread it and got a replacement nut for the new threads.

Please keep us informed, I am very interested to see if the smaller thread will tension up to 53 ft lbs.

ah i see yeah i learned a thing or two about the flywheel and its many endeavors :), let me know how it turns out for you

Make doubly sure that the tapers in the flywheel and the crank are very, very good, lap them if they in any way seem damaged by a previous spin.

Do not use Loctite on the threads, it will act as a lubricant and could lead to over tightening and thread failure.
