my eyes are bleeding, how do i change the display of the forum from the dark gray text font on the black background? sorry for the lame question
On to the epic intro.
Bought a blaster project, 2004 model. 1st ever quad for me. Not running. Seller says all i need to get for it is a .010 piston. So I get the piston and it won't slide in the jug. So off to get bored and fitted. OK
As I'm installing the top end I notice that there is thick silicon slimed over the case seam and that all the case screws are stripped. Press on the install and get it running.
Billowing smoke would describe the ensuing test ride. I go about 90 seconds out, smoke fails to clear so I retreat. transmission that was full of oil 2 minutes ago is now empty. Can you see where this is going?
i call the seller "no I never split the cases, i just had the piston out because it was down on power" yeah, right.
So I take the top end off and look into the crankcase. I can see that there is no gasket material between the case and the trans compartment. i figure that some squid just used silicone and haphazardly threw the cases together and that the silicone seal failed.
Pull the motor and split the cases. Fabricate crank puller, drill flywheel to pull etc, etc. Everything looks normal except for that hairline crack in the case where the piston shrapnel wreaked havoc. i guess "down on power" really meant "piston exploded"
The damaged area had been cleaned up by someone so I pressed on, got everything all cleaned up and put back together with some proper Hondabond ht.
The sealant is setting so I'm trying to work quickly. But i can't get the cases quite together in front. i have pulled the crank in as far as it would go. then i notice all the hammer marks on the case bosses. i'm not the first sucker to encounter this problem. The prior "mechanic" just saw this as a silicone deficiency and buttoned it up. I now know why the case screws are stripped too.
I'm staring at this turd all glassy-eyed when it dawns on me that the crank webs are closer to the case on the left than on the right. Time to pull that side off and have a looksy.
Pulled the clutch, crank gears etc. etc. There seems to be a gap between the crank bearing and the seal. the crank slides in and out easily on this side. I get my dental pick and mirror. There is a big aluminum chunk between the bearing and the case. This pushed the crank too far towards the left side, making it impossible for the cases to seal properly.
Idiot blew his piston, split the cases, pulled the crank etc etc only to put it back together with Huge Chunks of Shrapnel behind a bearing. Genius. Then he passed it down the line to me.
Live and learn. i'm in the process of sorting it out. Its backfiring and not in tune. I need to check the timing.
This website has been a great resource.
