so i gota replace the connecting rod bearing on my hot rods crank the guy before me put in. its a nice crank right? i dont see why it went which is so stupid. i gota do it myself because the places around here are gay and charge around 600 plus parts. rediculess prices.

im just wondering if anyone else has had to do this before? i still havent cracked the case because i need tools first then order some parts. i know i need a bearing for the connecting rod on the crank end but someone said i might need a new connecting rod or re-mill the connecting rod because it might be messed up. could this be the case?

heres what it is.(my video not some random one like my issue)

its not at the piston its down at the crank for sure. what other things should i be replacing while ive got this thing split? its a big job to split it and might as well take some years off the engine while im in there(its an 89).

and if anyones got some instructions or videos on how to do it that will help ALOT! anything on this would be great!

thanks

son of a biotch.

just found out all the details.

-$20 misc items like replacement bolts for crank case outer side and other stuff
-around $100 for a new wiseco piston kit
-around $100 for a hot rods connecting rod kit with bearings and all the stuff
-$25 or so for a gasket kit
-$50 or more for a main bearing and seal kit
-$20 for a fly wheel puller
-and i need to jerry rig a case splitter or do it half ass because the tools 200 bucks.
-the only good news would be my dads machine shop can take apart the crank and redo it with the new bearings and rod for free, would be alot more if i didnt have my dads shop.

not a happy man right now.

even more balls. confirmed cost. ordered parts today, will get them monday or tuesday. taking the head and jug in to get messured and honed to spec to get a new piston. so still need piston.

$244 for new crank. decided to skip everything and just get a new crank.(hot rods)
$65 for main bearings and seals
$35 for full gasket kit

the guys nice and said dont bother buying a flywheel puller, when you pick ur parts up ill just pull it off for you, takes like 5 mins so whatever.

probably going to be something around 150 for new piston kit and not sure about the honning. he didnt say.

this is such a biotch. cant belive its costing this much.

are you boring too?
if you're planning on staying w/ the same displacement, just buy a honing kit from auto zone or something for $30 and hone it yourself.

in order to install a new crank you'll need both, the splitter does exactly that it splits the cases, the puller pulls the crank on the bearing and seats it properly...

cant do without either? ive been told i can split the case without the tool but no one said anything about this crank puller. can i do without it? im kinda in a pinch for time/money.

i would not recommend you trying to split the cases without the tool, this is how peeps break the case, its only aluminum... as for the crank puller, no you cannot install a new crank without it...sorry but you have to buck up and spend the cash on the tools if your going to be doing this sort of thing yourself...

well i warned you....don't take this the wrong way but any mechanic who tells you to do something without the proper tools is a half-ass mechanic.

ok well going back to what you said about breaking the case because its only aluminum. its not the fragile is it? how could i break it using a rubber mallet? i could see a steel hammer but not a mallet or something. its not a toothpick right? it takes a beating

its actually cast alumium which makes it somewhat brittle, its not going to come apart using a rubber mallet, the case halves are sealed with a relatively strong compound called yamabond 4 ( which by the way you're going to need to do the rebuild ). you'd have to use a screwdriver or similar pointed object to get between the cases and this is where things tend to break becuz you're prying on it to break the seal and it takes all the pressure in one spot ( ie. point load ).

ill figure it out. but do i need to buy yamabond 4 even if i get a standard gasket in the gasket kit? i havent got it yet so i dont know whats in it. he said he didnt know if it had a case gasket or not. ive seen some with it in it.

there is no such thing as a case gasket, there is a clutch cover gasket but this is not for the case halves. yes, you absolutely need the yamabond 4 or something similar ( hondabond or threebond, but im not sure which mixture on these ) do not use RTV, it is not the same...

hey man ive split my cases 2 times without the tool and it wasnt all that hard.... just had to remove everything then i took a piece of 2x4 and a hammer and tapped it all around my seal till it broke loose then pulled on it a lil bit and u just be careful and put a flat head in there.... then you have ur case split

i never said it was impossible what i said was i don't recommend it. you break the case once and you just bought the tools, i dont understand why anyone would wanna take the chance of learning this the hard way, it seems much cheaper and easier to me to do it right the first time...

I split my cases without the puller deal and now yea thats right Fukked.. well mabey not all that but i lightly used something"this has been some time ago" any way theres no gasket there, and while i didnt break the cases it just leaks oil basicly no matter what i did so now i had to get a spare motor "thanx Regal" while i try and fix the mess i made.
basicly learned the hard way, would not do it again..
