Bolts?

Hi all.

Any one know if there is a set guide they use on bolts for working out the shank length of a bolt.

Say if I need a m6 bolt with a shank with 30-32mm blank what length bolt would I need?

Is the shank a sit length for the length of each bolt? Like a 50mm long m6 bolt has a shank of 25mm and a 40mm long m6 bolt has a shank of 20mm?

Or is there a app or software that can do this?
