If a stock engine asks for 87 octane gas but you put in 91 octane,could this cuz backfiring?? like let off the throttle a little and it like coughs through the silencer.

well back fire can happen in a lean condition or a rich condition. depending on what type of vehicle your talking about it can happen for various reasons . it could be an intake type backfire or an exhaust backfire or a combination of both.
