Hey guys. Great site !I:I I bought a blaster for my wife earlier this year. Been running and riding great for months now. (I even like riding it !, although im 5' 11" and 230 it still moves real good!)

Anyways my wife told me it wasnt shifting right. I took it for a ride and first off its hard to get into first or even neutral when starting. Then while your riding its hard to upshift and pops out of gear and into neutral on its own. I use yamalube oil in the case. I was hoping it was just low on oil so I drained it, but it was full. It did have small metal "glitter" in the oil. I put in fresh lube, but it still has the shifting problems. It also is hard to get into first when not running. Sound like a shift fork or something ? Also the clutch doesnt slip while riding, it seems ok.

I would appreciate any tips here ! Thanks !:-D

Also I have heard some debate about what to use in the crankcase. I know not to use any oil with friction modifiers. I have heard that 10-30 or 10-40 is ok. What about type F trans fluid, or heavier gear oil ?

sounds like theres something wrong with the shift star or the drum that rolls in the shift star, if you take the clutch cover off you can see it, thats the only way to find out

yea that sounds exactly like my blaster mine was my shifting drum and the star mine was screwed together and came loose causing me to loose gears well i thought but it was the star coming out of the keyway and getting stuck between 2 gears acting like a neutral and i ended up shattering piece of my shaft on my drum i still wanna get it welded but havent had the time to do it yet but i bet its deffinately the star

Thanks so far guys. I will pull off the clutch cover and take a look. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Well I took the clutch cover off. And I took the clutch basket out. Cant really see anything wrong. I did notice that I have alot of endplay in my shift shaft, (could be enough to come off the star wheel.) If I cant find the problem, I guess I will have too split the case and check further. Anybody know what the part is that contacts the star wheel is called ? I will try to post pics later. Thanks.

It could be that you have that small amount of play on your shift star. you shouldnt really have any play. also, I use bel ray gear saver. its the only oil I will ever use in my bottom end. I bet if you tired it you would never go back! :)

Thanks Fabb. It looks to me like the fork on the end of the shift shaft that accuaets the shift star has been welded. It has heat marks on it from a torch. (I think). This may be where my problem lies.

PICS SHOULD BE UP IN A FEW MINUTES !:)

I use yamalube 10-40 in mine. but I put o few ounces of Lucas oil stabilizer in with it. make the oil stick to the gears in there.. I love the stuff..

Turns out my the keyway slot on my shift drum is broken. I have heard it can be welded.....I hope so !

Sorry to bring back such an old thread. I got the shift star welded to the shift drum. Put it all together and I only have first gear. If I try to upshift its hard to do and only ends up acting like its in neutral. (Dammit anyway). I took her back apart and pulled the clutch basket out. Tryed shifting it by hand while turning the input/output shaft (whatever its called) and it would only be solidly locked in place (in gear) while it was in first. If I tried rotating the shaft while trying to upshift by hand it would just turn in place. Seems as though I have other problems here. Any tips ?
