So I traded my beat up / broke down 04 blaster for this 2001 blaster in really good shape, runs perfect. The original owner of it said it was stuck in 3rd gear, but the guy that bought it (who I traded) says he put a new shift shaft on it. But he tried to back out on tradeing cause it started shifting weird. But I told hi it was cool and I could fix it.

Anyway it will shift from 1st up to 3rd ok, it takes a little more force than usual to get it into 2nd, but it will shift up. But once you shift up past 4th it will only shift back down to 4th, it's weird and it will only shift down from 3rd if you don't go into 4th. I figure out a way to down shift, I get of the bike and shake the shift up and down and it will down shift.

The guy says he may have bent the shift shaft when he put it I. But to be honest I don't even know what that is. I'm pretty good with these things so it shouldn't be to bad once I get the pitched I. The right direction, anyone know what's wrong??

sounds like the detent springs on the shift shaft aren't returning it to it's nuetral position, which it must do to shift up or down to the next gear, thats why when you phsically return the shifter to it's nuetral position it will shift normally.
that spring can get weak or the tail ends come off their resting spots which give it the spring action.
this is located inside the clutch cover, on the flat metal part that engages with the shift star.

time to pull the clutch cover and see whats up.
worst case sounds like a new/used shift shaft will cure it's shifting problems.

if nobody on here has one for ya, there's quite a few on ebay...

Try the easiest thing first. Back your drain plug out a couple turns. If this fixes the problem you either need the washer that goes on the bolt or you have the wrong bolt. Believe it or not the clearance is really tight between the shift drum and drain plug. If that doesn't work you might have to slit the cases and see what's going on. Try the drain plug first and report back.

Hey, new here and must say, very impressed with what i see and how eager everyone is with helping one another,
now i have a Blaster, not sure what year but since i bought it i had one problem on top of another, fix some of them but this is my headache one, shifting from 1st to 3rd but not 4th to 6th, with clutch cover of and moving bike forward and back words it shifts through all gears, bit stiff but ok, so as Awk08 said,i would like to try that..so how can i test the spring theory? and then also, see on youtube they remove the oil pump and block the hole off, is that save, because when i opened the oil pump cover i was shocked, ... NO OIL PUMP!!! the previous owner removed it but left the gear and shaft in.... lose and dangling all over, so i removed the gear before it can cause any damage.

Well i hope you guys can help me too
