2 Stroke Snowmobile Help?

I just picked up a ski doo blizzard 500 off my buddy, it needs a lot of work but it runs and rides alright. One side of its twin motor will not run, it is because of the coil being shot (I know this) but I need a bit of assistance with a few things:

- It will not idle, is this because 1 side is not running?

- The exhaust has a lot of gaps as it is a welded together combo of exhausts, what effect will this have on riding?

I paid $200 for the sled, It will need about $150 of work to make it look real nice and be a good respectable machine, I may need help with a few other things as I start working on it. Thanks in advance.

well first off replace the coil and see if it will idle. if that doesnt work your carb(s) will need adjustment.

it's a single carb, fan cooled. What about the exhaust?

That will have an effect on the performance of the machine.

pics of the exhaust will help, it shouldnt be welded anywhere, single y pipe from the headers, then the main exhaust pipe, then a silencer held on by springs

yes one cylinder not running could keep it from idling... think about it, the machine isn't burning fuel on one side so one cylinder has to push around all the excess weight (the other piston, other side of crank) without any help from the other cylinder. and the exhaust shouldn't keep it from idling but it would definitely hinder performance. hope this helps.

The exhaust is held by springs where the Y joint meets the header, but there's a lot of welded patches on that area and I suspect leaks. Would I just lose some speed? and I figured running on 1 cylinder, because of the timing on idle, it should stall.

what casey said above about one cylinder on idle is right, my indy was running on one cylinder on my way to my buddies, ridin along and hit a bump and it poped into 1 cylinder, so i hi tailed it back home and opend up the carbs, the gold float that attaches to the spring was vertical which gave one cylinder no gas
