I perform a leakdown test every few months, and right before the next riding season. This insures that you will not run lean due to unmetered air entering the cylinder.
I suggest to do one at least once a year, or when you start to notice a power issue, lack of powerband, high uncontrolled idle, jetting problems etc. This will help prevent siezing the motor! That is of course unless you can afford to rebuild often! -slick
