Well, I got some time and the FLIR camera and got us some heat picts.
I am not the usual user of this device but I have been asked to get more experience with it. Here is a start:

Blaster warming up, short run around the yard, 7 to 8 degree C here on Sept 12. The streaks on the pipe are mud, heating up (or emitting) more than the chrome pipe. Notice the gearbox is cold (same temp as frame). Same with tires and shocks.

Neil giving it a blast, getting it as warm as he can on this cool (7c) night.
This is a moonless overcast night, it was black out there.
Notice his working headlight is cooler than the engine?

Front brakes, rear axle, rear brake not used, tires heating on centers (too much pressure) chain and brakes up to 25c. Front and rear bearings look cool.

Enough air in that rear tire? Or is it just not warmed up enough? About 5kms running.

Thanks BEST!

I've been waiting for this! This goes to prove that my engine tempuratures in 100 to 105 degree weather is just fine!

Very neat stuff! That cylinder and cylinder head (as one unit) show a nice EVEN heat after warm up and while running. I suspected that was the case when checking my engine tempuratures with my infrared thermometer,

Very Cool!

This looks like pretty even heat.

A bit cool at the ends of the fins, reason for low reading here.
It was 130c in near the head. Looks like it is near 140c right near the plug?
That would be 285f. It is remarkably even heat.

Yes, I also bought the Trail Tech sparkplug temp gauge for my KZ1000 (and now I have an XS1100 too) to check their temps. They get blistering hot on hot hard climbs 2 up. Just haven't got them on yet... <BLUSH> That will be nice to get a reading off too.

So I was seeing temps of about 125-130c on the head which is about 260F which is getting close to char and smoke oil. Cylinder was about 80-90c or about 180-190F, cooler than most watercooled engines run. But keep in mind, outside temperature was only 45f tonight.

Playing with the settings I should be able get very detailed pictures of the gradient between the head and cylinder. I am supposed to learn more about it and to be able to use it so I'll have to bone up on it. Interesting how cool the case stayed, and the chain is not as hot as it looks, the range resets automatically to cover the hottest and coolest things in the picture. Chain was only 25c or 77f, about the same as the front disk brakes. Wheel Bearings did not even register a change with about 20 minutes of riding. It does indicate the friction in the chain however.

I have this thing overnight, maybe I can get Neil to come and ride his Blaster hard tomorrow and see what we get for temperatures and gradients. I will probably try it on the air cooled 4 strokes to see how they compare. Give me your orders for what you would like to see.

Whats next? ...X-RAYS???:)

Not allowed to take the x-ray machine outside of the factory and not allowed to bring the Blaster inside...

What factory? :)

A big tire plant, make 18wheeler, big earth mover and military tires here.
They x-ray them for quality control actually. I am a Maint Supervisor here.
Also work with ground Search and Rescue as a training officer in my off hours.
I think I have ADD. Every couple years I either jump jobs or pick up another one.
Soldier, Medic, Storesman, Driver, Machinist, Millwright, Electrician, Quality tech,
restaurant owner, gun shop, taxi business, rentals, transmission shop, can't stop.
While I am doing any job I am studying for my next, always been like that.
Not rich, divorce, big family and long vacations eat up the surplus.
A fool and his money are soon to part.... But memories of the orgy will last a lifetime!

You know, if you think about it, what makes you happy?

Money? Cars? Bikes? Women? Travel?

Think about it, if you had any one of those things (or all!), what would you do with it?

Well, you'd ride the hell out of it! Do EVERYTHING you could with it.
You'd LEARN what you could do with it. Learning something new is the key to happiness.
Really is. This is kinda the basis of my internal philosophy. You too I suspect?

So, I have been looking at lathes for sale. Thinking 14"x40" is kind of my minimum.
Any suggestions for me from what you have been working on?

Those pictures are amazing....

The even heating of the cylinder is especially surprising! One thing to note about that though, the super hot exhaust is in the shot so the scale is like 5-150°C so large temperature differences (frame versus engine) are obvious while smaller differences (the 10-20 degrees C of gradient across the cylinder that I would expect to see) are less resolute.

The other thing to look at is the mud splatters on the exhaust. Those areas aren't actually hotter... That's an issue with emissivity. Darker "matte" finishes emit infrared radiation FAR better than shiny chrome or polished surfaces. The entire exhaust system as as hot as those mud splatters, it just doesn't "look" as hot to that camera.

Very cool stuff.
